Elevating the story of Nene to the next level – policy making.

In celebration of International Women’s Month, the research team on the Pre and Post-Pandemic Incidence of Teenage Pregnancy in Northern Mindanao of Northern Bukidnon State College has been invited last Friday, March 17, 2023, to participate in the joint meeting of the Committees on Health, Nutrition and Health Insurance, Education, and Social Services for the crafting of the proposed City Ordinance preventing Teenage Pregnancy in Cagayan de Oro City. 

The research team, headed by Dr. Mary Koren Witting-Acuesa, presented to the city council the initial results of the incidence of teenage pregnancy in Cagayan de Oro City from 2017-2022. The said study became the basis of discussion for the formulation of a city ordinance against teenage pregnancy.

Representatives from the Commission on Higher Education, Department of Education, Colleges and Universities in the city, Oro Youth Development Office, Community Improvement Division, Department of Health, Northern Mindanao Medical Center, Commission on Population and Development, City Social Welfare and Development Department, Non-Formal Education Sector Local School Board were among the attendees and resource persons.

Congratulations to the research team composed of Mary Koren Witting-Acuesa, Rolan L. Mancha, Reynan S. Salo, Mona Liel E. Lacsa, Cristine Joy G. Sagaosao, and Jeddah B. Quiño for this milestone.

Many thanks to the NBSC’s executives, headed by the College President, Dr. Catherine Roween Chico-Almaden, for the overwhelming support since day 1 of the conduct of this study. Also, the team is grateful to Vice-Mayor Jocelyn Rodriguez for the opportunity to share our advocacy with a bigger audience.

Indeed, this is just the beginning of a deeper and bigger mission of NBSC against teenage pregnancy.

The second hearing is set for Friday, March 24, 2023.
